Web Based IRC!
Thanks to Mashable’s post on Mibbit I’ve found something I’ve wanted for a really long time – Web Based IRC! Fantastic! Mibbit looks great. 🙂
IM for Introverts
My husband sent me this article on instant messaging for introverts saying “So that’s why I never log into facebook” and it got me thinking. I thought I would share my response with the class:
This is because you are introverted, don’t like to multi-task and you see all of these things as something that takes effort.
For myself, I agree a bit, but I guess I’m sort of different again. Still introverted, but different.
By updating twitter etc I feel as if I can go back to my solitude, but I’ve kept my friends in the loop. Same with IM – I can chat a little if I feel like it, but essentially I’m at home by myself or whatever.
I used to use it more often when living by myself so that I didn’t drop entirely out of the loop. These days I use it when I don’t mind some distraction. When I’m kind of ill, or off work but not trying to study. Or if I’m at work and WANT a distraction to make the day go quicker.
But I think the difference is in the attitude to IM and twitter as an interruption. I can ignore it. Just because I’m logged in doesn’t mean I’m at the computer. And most of my friends know that. I’ll respond when I feel like it. In that way it’s exactly like email.. only the conversation can go quicker if both parties feel like it. I see them all as another sort of email/asynchronous chat and I make the IM notifications as un-noticeable as possible.
In fact, I think most of my friends that use IM are similar. We all love being at home by ourselves, with an occasional communication with our friends via IM or whatever just to reassure us all that we ARE still friends. Then we go back to being alone. It’s perfection. We all still have friends to party with when we want them.
I therefore see IM and facebook as the tool of the introverted.
You’re just a different breed. 🙂
Embedded Presentations
I thought I’d post this little presentation for two reasons.
a) I think the presentation is kind of interesting and might be useful and/or interesting for the rest of the class.
b) I’ve only just found this presentation sharing website and I think it’s a great idea. Could be an excellent tool for future assignments. So far, this is the only way I’ve seen to be able to embed a presentation with audio for free. There are other ways to embed presentations for free, but they are without audio. Also, the idea of sharing the presentations is one I heartily approve of. Well done slideshare. Great idea. 🙂
Net11 Class Blog and Net11 Delicious Tag
I totally failed to mention that I’m a contributor for the Net11 class blog now. I also failed to mention the other delicious tag of note: the Net11 tag! http://del.icio.us/tag/net11. Myself and a few others (help us if you like) keep tagging things that are relevant. You can get an RSS feed of these links easily too. Could be handy for some of you!
Annoyances while studying
I’m trying to work this morning while it’s the 13th (or so) day of a news-breaking heat wave in Adelaide, so I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in over a week. The internet is achingly slow because somehow yesterday my husband or neighbour managed to get us shaped for the next 5 days or so. I’ve been busy working, performing and watching Festival and Fringe stuff, while somehow managing to squish in some study here and there. I’m also a bit worried about a friend of mine who managed to fracture a few vertebrae in a car accident the other day. Plus, I feel sick. Woohoo! Today rocks.
Getting our blogs together
I created a combined feed for all our blogs. I may have missed a few
blogs when I went through. If I missed your blog then tell me here and
I’ll add you. 🙂
Here’s where to view all our posts together:
http://www.google.com.au/reader/shared/user/07486373363067536535/label/Net11%20Blogs?hl=en
Here’s an RSS feed of all the posts:
http://www.google.com/reader/public/atom/user/07486373363067536535/label/Net11%20Blogs
Also, if you’re using a blog that allows scripts (like blogger) you can show a blogroll. I can email the code if you want it.. because webct and wordpress won’t let me post it.
Hope this is useful.
Deliciousifying internet communications links
I’ve just spent a substantial amount of time collecting relevant internet communications links and tagging them in delicious. If anyone is interested they are all tagged with “internet_communications”.
There’s already 45 links in the pool. I’ll keep adding them as I go, but from now on I’ll get them to show up in the blog sidebar automatically.
Internet Communications
So, it’s time to do a little study into internet communications. I’ll be using this blog and various other web 2.0 methods (like delicious) to document my findings as I go.
