Module 4: Evaluating the web

leave a comment »

Okay, well. The first thing I’ll point out is that the original task on searching said to “use search terms of my choosing”. So, the fact that I chose Meerkats leaves me completely unable to fill this task’s requirement of “being relevant to this unit”. Oh well. I’ve handed up the assignment it may have been relevant to anyway, so it’s all a moot point.

I’ve chosen to evaluate this particular site:
http://www.digimorph.org/specimens/Suricata_suricatta/

This article was written by an expert from Stony Brook University, and then catalogued in this archive by the NSF Digital Library at UT Austin. The article is well referenced and professionally written, so I have ascertained that it is a reliable and credible source.

The article briefly summarises meerkat information such as characteristics, habitat and habits. It is designed to be a brief reference for research purposes and university use.

I think that generally, the information I saved in to Del.icio.us would be sufficient for referring later. I can, however, forsee times when a more lengthy summary would be appropriate.

Module 4: Organising search information task

So, this task requires me to record my searches on Meerkats.

My usual way of saving urls for study is via Del.icio.us, so I’ve created a Meerkat Tag for these:

Module 4: Boolean Searches

leave a comment »

My previous search would have been a bad way to demonstrate boolean searches, so I made up another one. We’re looking for meerkats and pygmy hedgehogs now. It’s a world of cute. ๐Ÿ˜€

Search to get most results:ย  meerkat OR “pygmy hedgehog”

Search to get best results:ย  meerkat OR “pygmy hedgehog” -oreilly

Search to get university results only: meerkat OR “pygmy hedgehog” -oreilly +university

Module 4 : Search Task

leave a comment »

Topic picked at random is: Qntal. They’re a goth medieval band. Figured that would limit the results a little compared to the first topic I came up with: Buffy.

Google gives me approx 446,000 results.

My first web search via copernic has yielded 18 results. A basic desktop search of all my drives has failed to find my Qntal music (clearly filed). So far I’m not impressed.

Gah. And I can’t make it search the deep web or anything. I think maybe the web search functionality is different to when the course was written. When you try to search the web through copernic now it goes to here and isn’t customisable.

Module 4: Downloading Task

leave a comment »

Aargh. I don’t need any of this. I hate downloading and installing things I don’t need. I do download things and install them often, despite my hatred of it. So, this exercise is also somewhat pointless in terms of teaching me stuff.

I have installed things for this course, already. I installed filezilla for the FTP task. This was because I couldn’t remember the command line flag for ssl – Doh! I could have looked it up, but I figured I’d download filezilla because it’s sometimes handy, it’s a good program and I usually have it.

Maybe, I’ll share what I use instead of these programs.

  1. Instead of Acrobat Reader, I use Foxit Reader. It’s A LOT smaller than acrobat and just does what it needs to. And free. ๐Ÿ˜€
  2. Flash player = check. Almost essential these days ๐Ÿ™‚
  3. Media Players: Ugh I hate quicktime. It takes over your computer and is a great lesson in why I hate installing stuff I don’t need. The other two are okay, I guess. But try using VLC. It’s free, very good and it will play just about anything.
  4. Computer search. Hrm. I mainly tend to use my computer as a vessel for temporary storage. Most of what I want to keep is online and backed up in other places online. Could be useful for some people though. I might download and take a closer look at copernic.
  5. Bookmarks. Well, I’m entirely Deliciousified. My firefox toolbar has many many rss feeds of my delicious bookmarks and other fun feeds I find online. But that’s just for fun really. Never again will I be stuck with all my bookmarks on a computer that just crashed.
  6. Offline browser/copier. Not useful in my world. I can see it’d be great for some.. but a) I’m rarely offline. b) When I am looking at websites I usually need to research or get recent updates. Pre-stored stuff would be pointless for me. I used to have an offline broswer thing set up on my palm, but I rarely looked at it because everything was old by the time I checked it.

Thoughts on Copernic: This might be quite useful. I’ll have a go at the search task and let you know. ๐Ÿ˜€
