Internet Communications – By Angela Randall

An exploration of internet communications

Module 2: Lists

I am already a member of many mailing lists through yahoo, google and private circles. It’s still sometimes fun to take a look at what groups are out there!

What are the pros and cons of email lists versus discussion boards? Are there certain kinds of communication or purposes more suited to one than the other?

Most mailing lists are closed, so the outcome of any conversation is not made public in the way discussion boards are. This has both pros and cons for either method. It means that via the email list there is a greater sense of privacy and hence personal conversations are more likely. On a discussion board the conversation is nearly always public, which makes it searchable by people looking for quick information and is therefore great for help forums etc.
